    brainstorm

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian        hi,lingsian

    Ling Sian        (#)Eric         Hi Eric

(#)Eric           Ling Sian        there will be a brainstorm this afternoon in which I will be the facilitator

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       I have some questions to consult you

    Ling Sian        (#)Eric         sure

(#)Eric           Ling Sian        do I need to get the expectations before the brainstorm

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           is it internal or external? who is present? (in terms of roles?)

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           you need a very clear objective (expected outcome) and process for a brainstorm

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       capgemini consultants and clients

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       not very formal actually

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           clearly state the objective and expected deliverable of the session and explain the process. you can then just brifely check with them whether this is in line with their expectations (no need to be too formal about it). Also have some fround rules ready for a brainstorm. the thing that often goes wrong in brainstorm sessions is that participants start discussing the ideas too early

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           so you need very strong facilitation...otherwise many ideas will not get captured or people feel inhibited

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       oh

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       seems very difficult

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           how bis is the group? if very big, then better do the brainstorm part with post-it notes (individually)

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           well, if you establish clear objective, process and groundrules and the audience is collaborative, then it should not be too hard...... just prepare it well....

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       so what can I do to prevent the participants starting discussing the ideas too early

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       maybe 15 persons

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       and what should I do in the wrap-up of the brainstorm

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       just repeat the ideas of participants?

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           you set clear ground rules. During the brainstorm, we only express our ideas. we do not yet evaluate. only short explanation if needed is allowed

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           if your are 15, I would use metaplanning technique

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           that means that for the brain storm session, you give each partic some post-it notes (PIN) and let them write down their ideas on the PIN (1 idea per PIN)

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           as the facilitator, you go around the room and start collecting the PINS that are already written so you can put them up on a big brown paper while clustering them (same kind of ideas in the same cluster and you try to give each cluster a name)

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       Oh

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           while they are still writing, you should start reading alll the PINS so you have some idea on the content so you can summarise

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       there are no brown papers here ,the senior manager just want us to express idears orally

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           after they are done with the brainstorn, you present the different clusters and you can read out the ideas. The ones that are not clear, you ask for the person who wrote it to clarify

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           then, you should start selecting ideas

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           you can either do this by votes (each person gets for example 3 votes - they can take a marker and put a mark next to the idea they like) or the owner of the meeting chooses the ideas he like

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           depending on the scope and the time, you ideally select 3-5 ideas

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           then you do B's and C's for each idea (evaluation) and identify if there are killler concerns

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           if there are, then it is possible you might have to abondon this idea

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           for all the other C's you identify next steps

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           so that would be your action plan

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       what you have said is another CSW training for me

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           the execution of the action plan will decide whether the ideas are further implementable

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           I taught this at CSW!!!

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       。。。

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       sorry

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       sounds complicated

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           so at the end of the meeting, you just summarise which ideas have been selected and go over the next steps plan. you can also do a B's and C's of the workshop itself if time allows

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           it is very simple! just need to be a step ahead of your participants as a facilitator

    (#)Eric           Ling Sian       yes

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       very much thanks

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           you are welcome. good luck!

Ling Sian       (#)Eric           don't just do orally!!! please scribe on a flip chart or BP...otherwise the ideas get lost!

(#)Eric           Ling Sian       yes, I will do it
